IONOS claims to have over 6 million customers. This British company was originally called 1&1 and was registered back in 1988. After a merger in 2018, the company received its current name, IONOS, which is a member of the United Internet group.
The company deploys its equipment in many cities worldwide. In total, it has 10 points of presence as of 2026.
In the UK, they hosted in VIRTUS data centers which are located in Stockley Park, near London Heathrow Airport. VIRTUS is a UK-based data center operator headquartered in London, providing mission-critical facilities in the London metropolitan area. The first problem arose during account registration: the system wouldn't accept the address. I had to contact support. A contact email wasn't found, but I received a chat consultation and used the address the system suggested. It's a very strange system. The question arises: why bother asking for an address if no one cares?
Payment for the service is only possible by card. The VPS took over half an hour to activate.
The VPS control panel is intuitive but not responsive. It supports ISO image mounting, but not custom ISO mounting. A VNC console is also available. However, backup is a paid service and very expensive. Using the IONOS VPS will be quite expensive.
There is no scaling of the virtual machine, which is disappointing given the cost.
